[texts]Effects of Uncertainty in TRMM Precipitation Radar Path Integrated Attenuation on Interannual Variations of Tropical Oceanic Rainfall - Robertson, Franklin R.
Considerable uncertainty surrounds the issue of whether precipitation over the tropical oceans (30 deg N/S) systematically changes with interannual sea-surface temperature (SST) anomalies that accompany El Nino (warm) and La Nina (cold) events. Time series of rainfall estimates from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR) over the tropical oceans show marked differences with estimates from two TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) passive microwave algorithms...

Recent advances in micro electromechanical systems technology, digital electronics, and wireless communications have enabled development of low-cost, low-power, multifunctional miniature smart sensors. These sensors can be deployed throughout a region in an aerospace vehicle to build a network for measurement, detection and surveillance applications. Event detection using such centralized sensor networks is often regarded as one of the most promising health management technologies in aerospace a...

[texts]The effects of shock wave compaction on the transition temperatures of A15 structure superconductors - Otto, G. H
Several superconductors with the A15 structure exhibit a positive pressure coefficient, indicating that their transition temperatures increase with applied pressure. Powders of the composition Nb3Al, Nb3Ge, Nb3(Al0.75Ge0.25), and V3Si were compacted by explosive shock waves. The superconducting properties of these materials were measured before and after compaction and it was found that regardless of the sign of the pressure coefficient, the transition temperature is always lowered...

This paper discusses an approach to representing and reasoning about constraints over strings. We discuss how many string domains can often be concisely represented using regular languages, and how constraints over strings, and domain operations on sets of strings, can be carried out using this representation.

Quantitative values were computed which show the effects of the presence of small amounts of oxygen, hydrogen, and hydroxyl radicals on the finite-rate chemical kinetics of premixed hydrogen-air mixtures undergoing isobaric autoignition and combustion. The free radicals were considered to be initially present in hydrogen-air mixtures at equivalence ratios of 0.2, 0.6, 1.0, and 1.2. Initial mixture temperatures were 1100 K, 1200 K, and 1500 K, and pressures were 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 atm...

A GOOD SEPARATION OF MONO-, DI-, TRI-, AND TETRACYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS WAS ACHIEVED BY THE METHOD OF ADSORPTION CHROMATOGRAPHY ON NEUTRAL ALUMINA. THE ADVANTAGE OF THE METHOD IS CONSIDERED TO BE THAT SATURATED HYDROCARBONS AND RESINS ARE SEPARATED IN A SINGLE OPERATION. THE UV-MONITORING OF THE ELUTED FRACTIONS SHOWED THAT THERE WAS PRACTICALLY NO MUTUAL CONTAMINATION OF THE HYDROCARBON FRACTIONS.

[texts]Reinforcement Learning in a Nonstationary Environment: The El Farol Problem - Bell, Ann Mari
This paper examines the performance of simple learning rules in a complex adaptive system based on a coordination problem modeled on the El Farol problem. The key features of the El Farol problem are that it typically involves a medium number of agents and that agents' pay-off functions have a discontinuous response to increased congestion. First we consider a single adaptive agent facing a stationary environment...

It is shown by calculation of the response of a flexible aircraft to turbulence, that, as a rule, the turbulence field should be considered as isotropic. It is also shown how active control systems open the way to a next generation of aircraft that will be...

[texts]Many-body Effects in a Laterally Inhomogeneous Semiconductor Quantum Well - Ning, Cun-Zheng
Many body effects on conduction and diffusion of electrons and holes in a semiconductor quantum well are studied using a microscopic theory. The roles played by the screened Hartree-Fock (SHE) terms and the scattering terms are examined. It is found that the electron and hole conductivities depend only on the scattering terms, while the two-component electron-hole diffusion coefficients depend on both the SHE part and the scattering part...

Imprecise computation and parallel processing are two techniques for avoiding timing faults and tolerating hardware faults in hard real-time systems. When a result of the desired quality cannot be produced in time, hard real-time systems can produce an intermediate result of acceptable quality by imprecise computation, reduce the response time of the result by parallel processing, or both, to avoid timing faults...

[texts]MACS, An Instrument and a Methodology for Simultaneous and Global Measurements of the Coronal Electron Temperature and the Solar Wind Velocity on the Solar Corona - Reginald, Nelson L
In Cram's theory for the formation of the K-coronal spectrum he observed the existence of temperature sensitive anti-nodes, which were separated by temperature insensitive nodes, at certain wave-lengths in the K-coronal spectrum. Cram also showed these properties were remarkably independent of altitude above the solar limb. In this thesis Cram's theory has been extended to incorporate the role of the solar wind in the formation of the K-corona, and we have identified both temperature and wind se...
